Modern Icy Blue Christmas Tree

Minimal simplicity meets icy blue with my Modern Icy Blue Christmas Tree. Come see all the details!

Today is all about Christmas trees on the blog. And I’m excited to be joining several friends to share our themed Christmas trees (located at the end of this post).

Celebrating the birth of Jesus is #1 on our list, quickly followed by family + friends gathering together, the smell of hot cider and fresh baked goods. These things are why I love this time of year the most.

I’ve done a lot of different colors for Christmas decor over the years; sage green, dark blue, and even copper and bronze. This year I’ve decided to make a return back to my roots.

I grew up in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest; with a lot of fir and pine trees, the frigid cold and snow (which I prefer up in the mountains and skiing on, while wearing my heated boots, heated jacket and gloves, lol), so this year’s tree was inspired by the weather and forestry landscape from my childhood.

Elements used in our Modern Icy Blue inspired Christmas Tree:

  • Icy blue ball ornaments
  • Mercury glass ornaments
  • Glitter maple leaves
  • Giant wooden snowflakes
  • Smaller wooden snowflakes
  • Several ‘Star of Bethlehem’
  • Faux blueberry picks
  • Icy blue ribbon tied into bows

I absolutely love our 9 ft faux noble fir tree and many of the ornaments have been in my collection for years. I use my mercury glass ornaments as the foundation and then add a new color ball + coordinating ribbon to my collection making it fun + inexpensive to change things up each year.

The mercury glass serves as a nice neutral base and matches any tree I decorate. My biggest advice when decorating trees is to invest in the foundational pieces that you will keep and use year after year!

Then you can simply use a less expensive colored ball, ribbon or accent pieces like these blueberry picks to change the look of your tree each year.

Tips for layering your Christmas tree décor:

  • Add a variety of textures for visual interest.
  • Use ribbon! You can either tie ribbon bows, loop or hang strips to add to your tree.
  • Use a variety of different sized ornaments on your tree.
  • Picks, branches or flowers help so much with layering and adding that extra special touch of texture and interest to your tree.

Coordinating Wrapping Paper

I even love coordinating wrapping paper each year. This indigo blue and white “anais” gift wrapping paper by Ballard Designs was the perfect compliment to the white gift wrap with blue and gold picks.

Not only did I fall in love with the beauty of the Anais giftwrap (a design very popular in France), but the meaning of the name which is Merciful, Gracious, Holy.

Another tip… it is a lot more interesting to have a variety of different sizes and shapes than just the traditional one-size-fits-all packages under the tree!

    1. Thx Robyn. It’s always fun to change things up a bit and reminisce in my childhood memories at the same time.

    1. Thanks so much Melaine! It’s like a moth to a flame – I love staring at it (late night, early morning) with the twinkling lights. It’s just so calming and peaceful.

    1. Thanks Laura… Always love the ‘icy’ look as long as I don’t have to personally freeze to experience the ‘icy’ look. haha

  1. Beautiful! I love the blues and greens – reminds me of a tree I did once when we lived at the lake (we are in Canada but PNW!). So fresh and airy!

    1. I love the PNW (WA and Vancouver, Canada) just not the cold weather! haha. Luckily we get to visit family there often. Merry Christmas Krista!
