At the heart of this season, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, which is #1 on our list of joys. Right behind that, it’s the togetherness of family and friends, the warm aroma of hot cider, and fresh-baked treats. These are the reasons why I cherish this time of year so deeply.

Over the years, I’ve played with different color schemes for Christmas—sage green, deep blue, icy blue, even copper and bronze. But this year, I’m doing a nod to my son’s upcoming WSU (Washington State University) graduation.

Growing up in the scenic Pacific Northwest surrounded by fir and pine trees, cold winters, and snow-filled landscapes left a lasting impression on me. (Although I admit, I prefer that snow up in the mountains, where I can enjoy it with my heated boots, jacket, and gloves!) So, this year’s tree draws inspiration from the natural beauty of my childhood winters and WSU’s crimson brand color.

Psst… If you look closely, you will even see a few WSU logo ornaments that I DIY’d for this years tree!

Elements in Our Modern Burgundy, White and Gold Christmas Tree:

Our 9-ft faux noble fir tree (similar, similar) has been the perfect backdrop, and many of the ornaments have been part of my collection for years. The mercury glass ornaments act as a versatile base, allowing me to easily change things up each year by adding a new color or ribbon, making it both fun and affordable!

My biggest advice for decorating a Christmas tree? Invest in timeless foundational pieces that you can use year after year. Then, add affordable accents like colored balls, ribbons, or unique picks (like these raspberry accents) to create a fresh look each season.

Tips for Layering Your Christmas Tree Décor:

  • Add a mix of textures for a visually rich look.
  • Use ribbon creatively—tie bows, drape loops, or weave strips through the tree.
  • Incorporate ornaments in various sizes for depth and interest.
  • Use picks, branches, or floral accents to add extra layers of texture and charm.

Coordinating Gift Wrap:

Each year, I love to coordinate my gift wrapping with the tree’s theme! This season, simple white paper paired with rich, burgundy picks brings a stunning, eye-catching charm to each package, creating a look that’s as festive as it is elegant. Each gift becomes its own little masterpiece under the tree, adding to the holiday magic!

A final tip: Vary the sizes and shapes of your presents under the tree. It’s more visually interesting than a collection of one-size-fits-all packages!

  1. Your Christmas designs are absolutely beautiful and inspiring! I love how versatile they are. For someone just starting out, which neutral color would you recommend for tree ornaments—gold or silver? It’s hard to tell from your stunning pictures over the years!

    1. Hi Natalia! You honestly could go either with the gold or silver. I actually have both gold and silver. If you’re just starting out pick just one (either gold or silver) – I bend towards the gold because it is ‘warmer’ to me. But either one works beautifully alongside any additional colors you’d like to accent with in the future.
