Creating a Gravatar

Objective: Create a Gravatar that represents you and is displayed when you leave comments on blogs and other areas on the web!

A gravatar is a ‘Globally Recognized Avatar’. Your Gravatar is an image that is unique to you, and represents you online – a small picture that appears beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars have the ability to follow you across the world wide web and help identify your posts on blogs and web forums… this is just one more way to market your sites image and/or brand recognition!

HOW TO DO IT

1. Go to Gravatar.com. (Note: Gravatars run through WordPress.com)

Click on CREATE YOUR OWN GRAVATAR and sign up. If you already have an account, go ahead and sign in. (Note: You’re allowed to have multiple emails within one account).

Once you’ve signed up or signed in, just follow the steps to add your image. The steps are self-explanatory, so no need to bore you with repeating them here.

2. Upload an image.

The site tells you that you can upload any size file image and it will be automatically resized, but some people say their image doesn’t look very good or is blurry. Here’s EXACTLY the size and file format that I use and it comes out perfectly:

200pixels wide x 200pixels high (equals 2.778” wide x 2.778” high). 72 dpi. PNG file format.

Key Tip: Upload the same image for your Gravatar that you use for other social media platforms. Why? This will help you and your brand become more recognizable.

3. You’re done. Allow 5 to 10 minutes for avatar changes to take effect.
