How To write an awesome About Page
(Tana riding a cow – WTH?!)
How many times have you seen a generic about page? Don’t you feel like it’s a fill-in-the blank template; insert name here, insert past work here, insert what doing now here… This screams to me B.O.R.I.N.G!
Here’s what I do (and what I teach others), in order to create an awesome about section!
First, write three unique things about yourself. Second, write three things you like or like to do. Now write a sentence on each of these things…and that is your paragraph!
For example, three unique things about me could be:
-I like to jump in puddles in the rain.
-I use to love to find the hidden objects in the Highlights magazine while waiting at the dentist’s office.
-I really wanted a pony as a child, but my Dad wouldn’t buy me one so I rode one of our cows instead.
Three things I like could be:
-I’m really inspired by fashion magazines.
-I like to go on long walks with my family and dog.
-I like to talk. And like my Dad always said, “Tana, you like to talk so much you could even talk to a stump!”
About Pages should showcase you/your personality and allow someone to RELATE AND CONNECT TO YOU on some ‘commonality’ level.
Real Life ‘About Tana’ page Example and Breakdown.
My about Tana page says A LOT without saying a lot. There’s not a ton of copy that people have to read through, but still tells quite a bit about me, my life and my personality.
Why is this so important?
You want people to get a good sense about who you are and what makes you tick. You want to promote authentic transparency and common interests. And an about section is a great way for people to get to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST YOU…which ultimately turns into sales (or readers).
Here’s the breakdown of my own about Tana section and what I shared:
-Where I’m located.
-What I do for a living.
-Some credentials/credibility. Me having been on national tv and featured in mags, speaks volumes about me/my work.
-What I’m passionate about.
-My spunk and the true length I’ll go to in order to find out what’s really going on. The Disney story is unique, don’t you think?!
-I tell you I’m a free-spirit, that I love classic movies, iconic Guess ads and Rock-n-Roll. No guess work here of who I am or what I like
-I also tell you that I’m married and have a family.
-And for those that DON’T want to read and rather simply look at pictures – I visually show people all kinds of things about me; pictures of my family, my love of ketchup, pizza and chapstick, a favorite quote, etc.
My about page promotes transparency and common interests . You can read my about section and feel like you have a good sense of who I am and what makes me ME… and I want your about pages to do the same!
Please comment below your favorite MOVIE because that promotes transparency + common interests!
My favorite movie is the 1962 James Bond “Dr. No” with Ursula Andress and Sean Connery. My favorite scene is when Ursula (aka Honey Ryder – I even love her name) saunters out of the water wearing that fabulous white bikini with the belt and ice pick at her waist! Classic.
My about page needs help. Thank you for these awesome tips. My favorite movie is gone with the wind, I love Mammy.
Let me know if you get ‘stuck’ – I’m more than happy to help or give you honest feedback!
I love McLintock! (1963) with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Anything with those 2 are my favorite
Thanks for the tips, just getting started and feeling a little overwhelmed, but this helped a lot. My favorite movie is Secondhand Lions. I love everything about the movie, but one of my favorite lines is…”they lived, they really lived”.
It can get overwhelming. Don’t feel like you have to do it all NOW. Get started, add an improvement and once that improvement is successful, add another.
Where are you in the process? Have you started your blog? If so, what’s the url
These tips helped so much!! I’m going to re-vamp my about me page right now.
My favorite movie is and always will be Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. The casting of that movie is as good as it gets! Especially the mom!!
You go girl!!! Can’t wait to read it. Ooooh, Pride and Prejudice is a good one for sure!
