{Design} Characteristics of Great Logo Design

I’ve been fielding a lot of questions lately about, “What makes a logo great?”

I believe it comes down to one thing…S I M P L I C I T Y !

So whether you are looking to personally create your own logo, update an existing logo or hire someone to create a logo for you (and yes, we can create a logo for you), here are some of the more crucial characteristics that will take your logo design to the next level of greatness.

They are:

Simplicity Matters. Your logo needs to be easy to read – people don’t have time to try and decipher those fancy fonts or see a bunch of little details. You’ve got SECONDS to catch someone’s attention and leave a lasting impression.

Design Flexibility. Your logo has to look great big and small. If your logo looks great big (say on a billboard) but loses the ‘details’ when it’s small (like on a business card), this is not a good thing. Also some fonts when sized down tend to start running into one another making it hard to read. Trust me, less is more!

Be Distinctive. It’s your visual representation and symbol of you and your business. If you are using any other elements in your logo besides the fonts, make sure it is relevant to your business – using wrong elements in your logo design can cause confusion towards potential customers!

Make it Timeless. You want your design to always feel fresh and relevant. Make sure you steer clear of any of the current logo design themes that are circulating, and instead create the right design that will never go out of style.

Be Memorable. When your logo sticks out from the land of mediocre, it will stick in the minds of people. A great logo is one that a person who has only seen it once is able to recall it and describe the logo to someone else.

These are the crucial characteristics, but keep in mind:

The whole point of making a logo design in the first place is to REPRESENT and EMBODY your business. If your logo design doesn’t convey that to the viewer then it hasn’t been very great, now has it?

For added inspiration, here’s a few logo designs that follow the characteristics outlined above.
